Gospel 101: Learning the Basics

At King’s Chapel, we are all about the gospel. Peruse our website and you’ll notice that the word gospel appears frequently. It’s embedded in our mission statement and repeated in our core values. And it is often included in the title of our sermon series.

So, it’s obvious that the gospel is in our vocabulary. But what is the gospel? We do a disservice if we only talk around the gospel rather than define it. There are many messages that are passed off as good news. But there is only one gospel that is the power of God to salvation to everyone that believes (Romans 1:16). It is the good news that Jesus Christ’s perfect life, vicarious atoning death on the cross, and his resurrection from the grave saves us from sin, Satan, and hell. By grace through faith in the person and work of Jesus, our sins are forgiven, we have peace with God and a home with Him forever. All other “gospels” are fake news that leave us hopelessly trapped in the deadness of our sin (Galatians 1:6-9; Ephesians 2:1-10).

At King’s Chapel, we not only endeavor to faithfully articulate the good news of Jesus Christ but we also seek to appropriate the good news of Jesus Christ to our lives in greater measure. So, you could say, we never outgrow the gospel (1 Corinthians 2:2). We never outgrow Christ, but instead grow into him who is the gospel (Ephesians 4:15). In other words, we never get over the glory of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Tim Keller has famously said that, “The gospel is not just the A-B-C’s but the A to Z of Christianity. The gospel is not just the minimum required doctrine necessary to enter the kingdom, but the way we make all progress in the kingdom.”

We want to help you grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). So, beginning November 17th we are offering a 4-week class called Gospel 101: Learning the Basics. We will dive into the basics of the Christian faith and answer questions like:

What is the nature of God?

Who is Jesus Christ?

What is sin and salvation?

What are the Scriptures?
